Call to Artists: Vision Initiative Mural Painting

Here is a really nice opprtunity to do something for the community and also earn $1,000!!!

Vision Initiative, a Leadership Jones County group, is currently accepting submissions from artists for a mural design to adorn the western exterior wall of the Laurel-Jones County Public Library in Laurel, MS. Mural design will be produced by local volunteers supervised by Vision Initiative and awarded artist.

Project: Replacement mural for Laurel-Jones County Library west exterior wall
Medium: Mural will be executed in tile mosaic
Requirements:
- Dimensions: 40’ wide by 20’ tall, 2:1 ratio
- Design: Large images, similar to exploded detail of an image. The reason for large, less complicated images is that pedestrian traffic is limited at mural, but automobile traffic is heavy as Library western wall is located adjacent to a highly travelled thoroughfare. Large images with little detail will be more greatly appreciated by a public with lessened observable time in an automobile.
- Color: Limit color use to 6-10 individual colors. Mural will be executed with mosaic tiles of solid colors by inexperienced volunteers. Awarded design will be transcribed to wall in linear format allowing workers to fill designated spaces with designated colors. Consider “paint-by-number” type designs to understand design possibilities.
- Theme: Ideas of community, education, literature, local history, local economy, etc and any other applicable themes appropriate to public art are important to local community and library patrons. Refrain from identifying specific corporate entities.

Deadline: December 26, 2008
Entry fee: None
Award: $1000 for selected submission
Send submitted designs electronically to jkimes@megagate.com, submissions made also be mailed to PO Box 527, Laurel, MS 39441-0527, Attn. Vision Initiative Artist Submission, or be delivered in person to the Laurel-Jones County Library between the hours of 8am-6pm Monday-Friday and 9:30am-3pm on Saturdays.
