Hello Handmade

I am so glad that Art and Craft Fairs are becoming such a great place to shop for the holidays! It is a great time to take a few minutes and reflect back on some of 2009's events and see which fairs are good to vend at in 2010. IF you'd like to leave a comment below and share what your fave events of 2009 were, I'd love to know!

I found this lovely artist (Hello Handmade) and promotion over at Poppytalk Handmade.
"We're in a festive holiday spirit over at Hello Handmade this week! To spread the cheer we've marked our 2010 Laureled Tea Towels down to $20! We've also listed some bulk orders in quantities of 2, 5, and 10 for those of you looking to stock up on gifts for friends, teachers, and family at a further discount and with free shipping!

To top things off, we're also having a little giveaway over at Poppytalk! Simply leave a little comment with your favorite holiday tradition by 10pm pacific today (not here, over at the Poppytalk post) and a winner will be selected and announced tomorrow. We will also have another little surprise to announce tomorrow, only for Poppytalk readers, so stay tuned!

Betsy and I have re-launched some old favorites from last holiday season as well. Back by popular demand are our Woodland Snowglobe and Joyful Bells Ornament downloads, as well as our Happy New Year Bunting. We're hoping to release a few more downloads next week but our to-do lists are brimming, so we'll have to see. And for those of you thinking of purchasing the O Tannenbaum Specimen Chart, quantities are limited. Scoop one up if it's on your list, before they're all gone!

Good cheer to you!

Shanna"

Come by the Bishop Arts District this Saturday (12-8pm) and Sunday (12-4pm) and visit us, as well as over 85 other great artists. And while you're down there, bring us a burger from Hunky's too! See you there!"

" October Market at St. Thomas Aquinas in East Dallas at Mockingbird and Alderson. We're excited to be doing a show close to home after traveling this summer.

Here's the scoop from the October Market:

The October Market is a one of a kind shopping

experience featuring items such as jewelry, home

accessories, art, antiques, personalized gifts, clothing

and more. With over forty new vendors, this year's

October Market is bigger and better than ever!

So, come join us for a day of shopping, lunch at the

Mom’s CafĂ©, and photos in the Pumpkin Patch."

"If you're in the DFW area and want to beat the heat inside while doing a little shopping, check it out on Friday evening, August 21st from 5-9pm and Saturday, August 22nd from 3-7pm. I've never been to a trunk show with this much fun stuff going on. Not only are there great vendors including Harrilu and Tara to the T (who were the other two Dallas artists at Renegade LA), but there are also going to be chair massages, makeup and hair consultations (I could desperately use), and other fun stuff. StoneMountain & Daughter Fabric Shop in Berkley, CA

This craft-friendly, fabric-friendly shop is so fun!! It looks like this shop is their only one. They have a really nice selection of unique materials and notions too!! See their website HERE.

As for craft shows in Berkley, I found this info:

Maven: Urban Design + Craft Fair
Read more on Craft: blog here...
1700 Dwight Way
(between Mcgee Ave & Roosevelt Ave)
Berkeley, CA 94703
(415) 710-4726

"The idea for Maven: Urban Design + Craft Fair was born from the final project in Adjowah Brodie's graphic design class at San Francisco City College. The professor asked the class to design a two color poster that captured the essence of a place or event, and Adjowah, an Oakland based jewelry designer, made a poster for the fictitious Women of Color Crafts Fair. She loved her poster so much she wanted the fair to be real. Although she has decided not to continue with her studies in the Graphics field, Adjowah was able to make the craft fair a reality.

Maven: Urban Design + Craft Fair is an indie boutique style craft fair featuring the Bay Area's most exquisitely skilled and ultra crafty women artisans. Held the second Saturday of every month, the next event takes place on October 14th from noon - 5p.m., at the corner of Dwight and McGee in Berkeley, California. Maven is a Hebrew word, which, loosely translated, means "One who is skilled in any field". Adjowah chose the name because she felt it best described both herself and the artists she'd met over the years at various fairs & festivals. "Off the top of my head I can name a local Soap Maven, a Felt Maven, even a Paper Jewelry Maven." Adjowah describes her customers as mavens, too. "When you shop this fair, you officially become a Shopping Maven, because you will be choosing from an eclectic assortment of gifts you just can't find anywhere else. You'll be an exceptionally gifted giver."

The Maven Craft Fair seeks to promote the businesses of all women, with a special emphasis on women of color in the arts/crafts/handmade/D.I.Y. communities. The Maven Craft Fair presents the best of the best, with a strong commitment to locally handmade arts, crafts, goods and services. Although Adjowah has gracefully exited the world of graphics, she is enthusiastic about her new project and looks forward to seeing it grow. "There's nothing else like it in the East Bay." she explains. "I know a lot of great women crafty types and I already have a waiting list for the November show. There is a need for this kind of marketplace, and I'm glad to be a part of it".

Mankind Magazine

This is a fun idea...
Why not make a PDF magazine featuring your own work, or the pretty things made by friends or other people you admire. This site sells digital copies of their magazine. Not sure the exact amount, but if you are familiar with Photoshop and Adobe InDesign or Frontpage, this is a really innovative idea. Word may even do nicely, just give it a try!! You could also use this same idea for family albums to give as gifts this holiday season...

To check out the Mankind Magazine, click HERE. Their website is AWESOME!! and contains a bunch of fun links to other cool sites.

Posters on The Hill

Just received information about this:

Each year, an event called “Posters on the Hill,” organized by the Council on Undergraduate Research, allows sixty competitively selected posters of undergraduate research projects to be displayed on the U.S. Capitol during a late afternoon reception. In the morning of the same day, there is an orientation session, followed by visits from students and their faculty mentors to their Representatives and Senators' offices. This event will occur in the Spring of 2010 and applications are currently being accepted until November 10, 2009. I strongly encourage SIUC students involved in undergraduate research to apply. Please see the following website for more information and their application portal - http://www.cur.org/pohcall.html.

I attended the event this past May with the SIUC zoology student who was selected, Andrew Dennhardt, and I would be happy to help with the application process or with any questions you may have.
