Call to Artists: Vision Initiative Mural Painting
Here is a really nice opprtunity to do something for the community and also earn $1,000!!!
Vision Initiative, a Leadership Jones County group, is currently accepting submissions from artists for a mural design to adorn the western exterior wall of the Laurel-Jones County Public Library in Laurel, MS. Mural design will be produced by local volunteers supervised by Vision Initiative and awarded artist.
Project: Replacement mural for Laurel-Jones County Library west exterior wall
Medium: Mural will be executed in tile mosaic
Requirements:
- Dimensions: 40’ wide by 20’ tall, 2:1 ratio
- Design: Large images, similar to exploded detail of an image. The reason for large, less complicated images is that pedestrian traffic is limited at mural, but automobile traffic is heavy as Library western wall is located adjacent to a highly travelled thoroughfare. Large images with little detail will be more greatly appreciated by a public with lessened observable time in an automobile.
- Color: Limit color use to 6-10 individual colors. Mural will be executed with mosaic tiles of solid colors by inexperienced volunteers. Awarded design will be transcribed to wall in linear format allowing workers to fill designated spaces with designated colors. Consider “paint-by-number” type designs to understand design possibilities.
- Theme: Ideas of community, education, literature, local history, local economy, etc and any other applicable themes appropriate to public art are important to local community and library patrons. Refrain from identifying specific corporate entities.
Deadline: December 26, 2008
Entry fee: None
Award: $1000 for selected submission
Send submitted designs electronically to jkimes@megagate.com, submissions made also be mailed to PO Box 527, Laurel, MS 39441-0527, Attn. Vision Initiative Artist Submission, or be delivered in person to the Laurel-Jones County Library between the hours of 8am-6pm Monday-Friday and 9:30am-3pm on Saturdays.

Holiday of Hope Southern Illinois University 2008 Shryock Auditorium
Carbondale "Holiday of Hope"
MDA Executive Lock-Up
Wednesday, December 10, 2008
Shryock Auditorium - Southern Illinois University
Carbondale, IL
Thank you for inquiring about the 2008 Carbondale, "Holiday of Hope" MDA Executive Lock-Up. Shryock Auditorium will host the event on Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Volunteers from local businesses will plead guilty to having a "Big Heart" and serve a one-hour sentence at the Shryock Auditorium, our "Maximum Appreciation Site." You may choose any hour between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for your "arrest." We will give you all of the tools you need, including a personalized web site where you can raise your "bail" online.
By agreeing to participate you will get the chance to mingle with other friendly felons. Your friends and family will get a kick out of it when you ask them to help "bail you out". Pre-raise your $1,000 bail (in the form of cash, checks, credit cards, and online donations) and you’ll qualify for prizes and help make dreams come true for local children and adults with neuromuscular disease.
Funds raised through MDA special events help provide expert medical care at the MDA clinic, MDA summer camp for youngsters, repair and purchase wheelchairs and other equipment, and many other services. MDA also funds hundreds of top scientists worldwide seeking treatments and cures.
For more information about MDA and to volunteer for this event, call 866-310-4MDA or e-mail capegirardeau@mdausa.org.

Oxford Town Hall Marketplace in Cape Town
I am quoting a writer for the folksy blog when I say:
"It’s great having an online venue to sell and talk about crafts, like Folksy, but I just love well curated, real, markets where you can see and touch things and meet people. There’s a great one in Cape Town called The Neighbourgoods Market, from where the image, above, was taken. It’s lively, there’s an energy and a buzz about the place. The Maker Faire’s in the US run by O’Reilly are a great example too. However, most craft markets in the UK tend to be a bit ‘damp’ but I’ve high hopes for two that are upcoming:
Firstly, Handmade Oxford which is on November 9th at Oxford Town Hall. Then we have We Make in London on Saturday 6th Dec on Tottenham Court Road. We’re going to be doing a bit of something around We Make which I’ll talk about later but it’ll be a competition around Makes, which will (yes, honestly, definitely, no excuses) will go live by the 24th November. Woo. I know we wanted to get this functionality out in September but other things got in the way. Anyway, I’ll introduce that Making stuff properly, later."
I do not know the full name of the author, so the only citation I can give is the link to the BLOG HERE.

A New Selling Site called Folksy: Cast, solder, cut, knit, mould, sculpt, buy, sell, go!
I found this new shop for UK sellers on someone's blog. Folksy is set up very similarly to Etsy, and has a cool section on making, a place where sellers show instructions of the items they make. This feature and several others make Folksy seem more community oriented, rather than just a place to buy/sell items.
The Floksy BLOG is really great though. I recommend checking it out! They have lots of fun videos embedded in their site which I had some difficulty transferring for you all into this site.
I believe at this time, only UK sellers are allowed for soem reason, maybe currency issues??? But I hope in the near future they will be able to cater to US sellers. Maybe with the help and support of people like you and me, that will soon be possible!

This type of Catalog is just great for inspiring images and stories of high-class, upscale art fairs. I believe they are more in the art realm than the craft realm. But, wow, wouldn't you like to be on the COVER??
