Held over a 3-day weekend, more than 250,000 visitors shop from the Valley’s best selection of fine art and craft, from more than 350 artists who come from nearly all 50 states and beyond. The Festival occurs in a vibrant street fair atmosphere in the Mill Avenue District of downtown Tempe, Arizona. This juried show does not admit buy-sell artists, and promotes original art with all artists on site to engage visitors. Held semi-annually, the Spring version of the Tempe Festival of the Arts is geared toward slightly fewer artists than our Spring Festival, and appeals to an actively-interested art buying audience. Fully a third of the Festival’s visitors are escaping the last of the winter blues and come from outside Phoenix and outside Arizona, on Spring break vacation or attending Cactus League baseb all in the Valley. It’s fun for the whole family, too, with live entertainment, special kids’ activities, and the Arizona Wine Festival. The Spring Tempe Festival of the Arts offers a wide variety of amenities for artists including hospitality carts, booth sitting services, a large-art delivery assistance program, and a 24-hour security patrol. In addition, we host a fun evening of awards and entertainment, free to artists who pre-register for it. The event won “Best in Arizona” in 2006 from the IFEA-sanctioned AzTec Awards forum.

Essimar ~ from Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago

This lovely lady lent me permission to use her lovely images on this site. She vended at Renegade this past weekend, and had a very unique setup! She is located in Chicago, and I remember seeing her lovely paper entities years ago on etsy. Check her website out HERE! and her on ETSY HERE!...or Flickr HERE :)
Her setup is cute and inviting. She uses lighter colors, such as the white background, and friendly & fun shelving to display ordinarily 2 dimensional items. Te shirts hanging are cool and eye catching, too, while that image of the man wearing her shirts is also great! I encourage everyone to display pictures of people actually USING their items!!! This is a great technique :)

New Gallery Space in Alto Pass, IL (Southern Illinois)

new art space in alto pass: the red ear
first official call for work: image-makers and travel
work will be collected until september 14th.

to all area artists and potential participants:
i have spoken to many of you about collecting artwork, particularly photography, for the first official group show at the red ear. for those of you who don't know, the red ear is located in a commercial building space on the alto pass boardwalk, right across from the root beer saloon. it is about 1600 sq. feet, white walls, and decent lighting. although i hope to be doing more with the red ear in the coming months--like workshops, artist socials/potlucks, and art trading sessions--at the moment, it is functioning as a gallery space and a wifi hot spot.

this show will be of work that was done while image-makers (not limited to photographers) have been traveling. this theme came about mostly b/c i know there are lots of you out there that have been traveling and shooting; but more so, i hope to collect work that represents travel and movement through both foreign and familiar places--landscapes, portraits, street photography, the snapshot aesthetic and documentary would all apply. by collecting work from several artists, i hope to install a show that will share experiences and perspectives with the viewer from the image-makers point of view, but at the same time, will give the viewer a chance to see photography as a method of both remembering and recording.
the call for work is not limited to photography, or even 2D work, so please keep this in mind as you think about what you might have in your archive or studio to show--also, please spread the word to those you think might also be interested.

if you are interested in submitting anything to this call for work, please respond as soon as possible.
i will be collecting work until september 14th, and the show will be opening the following weekend. work will be collected in carbondale, and there will also be drop off times at the alto pass location.

for details, or if you have any questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to contact me.
